NPC Scientific Program
Research themes
The five research themes are set -up in close collaboration with the NGI Genomics Centres of Excellence. The research themes the NPC focuses on are:
NPC T1: Cancer Proteomics
NPC T2: Proteome Biology of Plants
NPC T3: Proteome Biology of Micro-organisms
NPC T4: Proteome Biology of Stem Cells
NPC T5: Proteomics and Autoimmune Diseases
The Enabling Technolgies Program focuses on the development of proteomics and bioinformatics tools at the cutting edge of proteomics research. The last couple of years a large effort was placed on developing new tools and technologies to analyze proteomes. Although in proteomics major achievements have been made, the NPC board realizes that present day proteomics research and technologies are still not sufficiently developed to allow comprehensive investigation of proteomes in all their facets. Therefore, it is scientifically still extremely important to put a strong focus on the research and development of new technologies in some of the key (bottleneck) areas in proteomics. These focal points have been selected on the basis of both the urgent need and the potential for significant advances through the collective expertise available in the Netherlands, brought together in the NPC. Therefore, a substantial “new” theme in NPC will be the “Enabling Technologies” theme, wherein most technology oriented research will be coordinated within four sub-themes:
NPC/NBIC Gaining Momentum at the Proteomics-Bioinformatic Interface
Bioinformatics for proteomics in the Netherlands is still in its early stages. Technology centers like the Netherlands Proteomics Centre (NPC) develop at a rather high speed novel tools and methods to obtain faster and more reliable proteomics data. With this an urgent need for state of the art bioinformatics tools and analysis algorithms has emerged. To address this need, the NPC has started, together with the Netherlands Bioinformatics Centre (NBIC), several bioinformatics projects to produce generic tools for proteomics data storage and analysis.
NPC-GM WP1: Information management and processing infrastructure
NPC-GM WP2: Data Processing from raw data to consistently annotated peak-intensity tables
NPC-GM WP3: Functional annotation and classification
